Good evening folks! I have a great interview here from the other night as I was in New Jersey nd caught up with the devils owner in Dudnee! Lets see what he had to say throughout the course of the evening!
Budz: Hey DudNastyy, Welcome to Hanging With Budz!
It's about time we finally sit down and have this interview that has been
months in the making haha!
But before we get into the juicy hockey questions, please tell the VGHL community about yourself to refresh the old members and inform the many new members we have who might not know you!
Dud: I am Dudnee, I'm 19 and from the great state of New Jersey. I've been a part of VG for 5 seasons now and look forward to playing here for the foreseeable future.
Budz: Being from the states and hockey while growing up in the good ole US of A, how did you become a hockey fan and take interest in the sport?
Dud: My dad has always been a huge Devils fan since they have always been the states biggest(and right now only) pro sports team so I just ended up taking after him and I just grew to love the game more and more as I grew up.
Budz: Awesome! So going away from hockey, what else does the Dudnee like to do in his free time? Do you have any cool interesting other hobbies?
Dud: Since I'm in college right now I don't really do much besides school and hanging out with friends outside of gaming, but when I was still in highschool I loved going to parties and going outside with my friends to play whatever sport that day. I'm also very invested in music and am constantly either playing music or watching videos about rappers ect. Honestly though a big portion of my life revolves around hockey so I don't really follow much outside of it besides music and other sports.
Budz: There is nothing wrong with that at all! Well lets go the college route! What are you going to school for?
Dud: I'm going to school for business management right now.
Budz: What would you say your goal is 5 years out of college?
Do you plan on working for the man or for yourself?
Dud: I'd definitely like to own my own business at some point, but that's all I really have written down right now. Not sure what the business would be or when I want to start it, just that I want to be working for myself at some point.
Budz: Good for you and stick to that goal because that is ultimately what we all want but can't always achieve.
Thanks for sharing a bit about you outside of the virtual hockey world.
So the reason we are here. Ths VGHL.
You let us know off the top that you have been here 5 seasons now!
How did you first hear about the VGHL?
Dud: I actually first joined in I think like season 14 or 15 because Hyper asked me to but I think I only lasted like 1-2 games before quitting. When I got banned from LG I took a couple month break from NHL and came back to the game by rejoining VG in season 19 to play a league for the time being, then I just ended up playing every season since.
Budz: What keeps you returning to VG? And after 5 seasons in your own opinion, do you believe the current stat of the VGHL to be in?
Dud: I just really enjoy playing VG, not only do I get to run successful teams but I enjoy playing more than just 3 games a week. This season too I was able to get 2 of my close friends in Liljegren and Temp on my team with 2 other of my close friends in Langz and Tdxbz to run my AHL so we could be a part of the same org. Overall I just feel like VG is really good/fun and everyone may not agree, but those who do should be expressing it in other leagues so we can help VG grow.
Budz: What type of other things or new things can VG do to help improve that growth?
Dud: Without being too critical I think it has to start with some of the owner selections. I don't want to get too deep into it but from a perspective of someone like myself, I don't want to be overpaid with nobody to play with on a last place team, it drives people away from the league. I feel with a better owner pool we'll see more structured teams and more good players joining the league.
Budz: Fair enough and I agree with mostly everything you said!
Now headed into another season of ownership leading the New Jersey Devils, how do you feel about this team going all the way and does it compare to your previous championship team?
Dud: I think my current team is definitely better than my Colorado Eagles team just because of the skill available to get, but compared to my Predators team I'd say it's pretty even but the argument could be made for either team that one was better than the other. Either way I feel the team I currently have is good enough to win a cup and I'm just looking forward to continuing the season with these guys. One thing I will add is it definitely isn't the same without guys like Jor and Stamkos who were for both the Eagles and Predators but this new team is a great group of guys and I hope a few of them return with me next season too.
Budz: Now good managers take a lot of heat in the VGHL for the teams they have and build, do you believe that it is warranted? or does it need to be addressed?
Dud: I've definitely taken my fair share and I think it should be addressed as it usually isn't coming from a good place. Personally I feel it comes from a fear of competition, especially from people like ItsJustSkillz who have a mid pack team and want to be a top team but won't be with teams like my own and Colorado in the league. I feel people shouldn't be hated for succeeding at what they're supposed to be doing as an owner. It's a bad look for the league and it drives out competition, which is what some people want when there's a fear of competition, but the people that know what's good for the league are happy myself, CapsFan and some other very solid and consistent owners like Peacekeeper Scoops Murphwizzle VegaRidge ect run teams here.
Budz: With so much attention on owners here, what can they do or how can they attract a better management pool?
Dud: I think it starts with keeping the better players in the league. If the 10 best players in the league currently took ownership next season, that's 10 teams that are projected to do good, and I'm sure each of them will bring in a couple people. So by just the good players we already have, we add more competitive teams and bring in new players basically overnight.
Budz: 100% and hopefully that will happen and continue to make the league good!
Picking up Boughss was a very good grab even at his 10.5 mill price tag!
Does having a top player like that on the team just give everyone the confidence that as long as he is on the ice, there is a good chance you're leaving the arena with a victory?
Dud: Me and Liljegren talked and we just felt like you won't win anything with someone like Boughs so we felt it was worth it to go all in for him. 10.5M is pretty hefty compared to when I had him at 3M, but personally I think me and Boughs are the 2 best players in the league with Liljegren being in the top 5 easily, so we felt the 3 of us together plus the other dominant players we have would lead to a lot more wins than losses and it's proven to be that way so far. He's been a cornerstone player for me 2 times before in the past so I knew exactly what I was getting when spending that money and I'm very happy I did it.
Budz: Having a roster with more than 1 game changer definitely is a huge help chasing a stanley cup.
Will you still be looking to add to this roster or are you pretty happy and content riding with what you have all the way?
Dud: I've made a couple moves recently and credit to Jmm Gui and Moo for understanding changes will happen and I wish them the best with their new teams. I am pretty happy with how we look right now and I plan on sitting to see how we do. I was really happy to bring in Chuck and Zercy who are both very solid players and add some depth I felt like we were missing. Bringing in B-Red was another move I was excited about as well as he's a great player and I think he gives us that extra edge we've been missing in a few games this season. Also, getting B-Red back for Gui essentially got me Temp and Swaymxn for free which is another positive.
Budz: Ya that was huge adding them for essentially nothing, your team is definitely better off now than it was especially with the depth!
After winning the AHL championship then the NHL championship you decided not to return as an owner and went into bidding which was really an interesting decision! You ended up in Toronto with Hypey and Budz and fell just short of the Eastern Conference final!
How hungry are you now to get the stanley cup back and why that decision.
What was the reasoning?
Dud: Honestly this season was more about getting to play with Liljegren and Temp as they're both banned from LG, but neither were there when we won the other cups so I'd like to give them a chance to win here. We definitely have our eyes set on a cup but right now we're just enjoying playing league together again. One thing people may not know too is I was talking with CapsFan to actually captain for Colorado instead of taking my own team, it just didn't end up happening.
Budz: Well with either decision you would be on a potential long run to the cup!
So other than the obvious team goal of the stanley cup, does Dud have any personal goals and awards he is after?
Dud: I'd obviously like to win the Norris and Jack Adam's again but I'm more focused on the team awards than anything. A personal goal I have is to reach 100 points in regular season on D as I've fallen short of it with my past 2 teams and only reached 100 with playoffs combined. I saw it's never been done in the 60 game season before and only a few times ever in VG so I think it would be something special to accomplish.
Budz: That would be a truly great feat to pull and let's see if you can manage it!
Well as wind down the interview I have a few rapid fire fire questions for you to answer!
