We are back this week to bring you the return of Hanging with Budz.
This week we return from the holiday break to sit down in Syracuse and chat with he Crunch Capt. DTurp!
Soooo lets get right to it shall we!!
Budz : Hey man welcome to Hanging with Budz glad to have you with me this week my man Dturp!... Please tell the VGHL a little about yourself and where you are from ?
DTurp : Born and raised in Victoria BC. Though I did live in Edmonton and hoping to head back there next summer.
Budz : Right on man glad to hear ... a fellow Canadian haha, so outside of hockey what does turp like to do ? any fun interesting hobbies we can get into ?
DTurp : Pretty much all my time is tied up with my kid who plays hockey. So you can usually find me bouncing around rinks on Vancouver island.
Budz : That's wicked dude how old is he/she ? and what level of minor hockey ?
DTurp : He is 10 years old. He plays AAA in both winter and summer. Loves being between the pipes.
Budz : Oh he is a fellow goalie awesome. I was a goalie growing up playing minor hockey as well. Pretty cool! So there is nothing dad likes to do outside of hockey ? no music ? building car models nothing ?
DTurp : Ya music is a hobby of mine. Used to DJ at a club in Kingston Ontario. Still do the occasional wedding.
Budz : Sick how long have you been doing that and when did you first get into being a DJ ? Any major influences we may know that you look up to or follow?
DTurp : Ya I DJ'd since I was about 17. Prince is the biggest influence for me. Boyce Avenue is also a major influence however they more do covers then anything else.
Budz : Prince hey! I am a fan of Prince. He has definitely brought a lot to the music industry! That's interesting to say the least! Did you ever dream of being a DJ full time when you were younger ? Or was it always just a side hobby?
DTurp : Nah just side hobby. Radio is the dream lol.
Budz : Oh like sports radio ? or actual music radio and being a DJ for a station?
DTurp : Either or to be honest. I like to be heard and not seen haha.
Budz : right on my man thanks for sharing! Now onto the reason we are here...
The VGHL! How has your first season gone ? and are you enjoying it ?
DTurp : Well the first season is a rough one. Lots of learning. Hardest part is trying to get the vets to play for a rookie GM.
Am I enjoying it? Hell ya it's super fun. I recommend it for those that have a team for sure.
Budz : Ya being a first time owner can be tough and can take a toll on you and will show you a lot about yourself haha... What else have you learned this season that you can take with you into future seasons of Management??
DTurp : I suppose taking everyone's opinion lightly. Kinda pick out the useful ones and disregard the ones that are trying to screw you for example. Toughest day was TDL. Can't tell if it's honesty or bs most of the time lol.
Budz : lol that is very true .. everyone becomes a great salesman at trade deadline deals.
With the season nearing the finish what are your goals the rest of the way ?
And what are you telling your players to keep them showing and motivated?
DTurp : Well we are on a little good stretch of hockey. A wildcard would be the dream. But a strong finish and maybe a surprise win would be fantastic.
I'm lucky too have motivated and egoless players on the team. We all talk to each and keep each other motivated. I'm lucky that I don't have to say much.
Budz : That's awesome good to hear man!
What would be different next time than you did this time ? scout more ? research players more ?
DTurp : Definitely not go in blind. Maybe grab a vet to be my 2nd in command.
Budz : That is definitely a good way to go, having someone with experience is huge when you are brand new to ownership! Even if they aren't the best player, just the knowledge they can bring about the league and players is huge. I have seen comments that you are more suited for the PHL and are phl caliber in the way you play. How would you address these comments if at all ?
DTurp :We were all league rookies at one point or another. Would I have liked to start in PHL? 100 percent. Wasn't a thing at the start of this season when I was offered this. Shouldn't really bother anyone who runs what team. Easy win right?
Budz : It really shouldn't matter to anyone else how another team is doing. It's very interesting in the NHL community how much others care what others do or how good they are etc. Never in my years of playing minor hockey growing up and into my adult years did you interact with the kinds of people you do in the online NHL community. Do you see your team making a run and making that wildcard spot ?
DTurp : Facts Budz Facts. Online egos are crazy. Honestly it's gonna be tough. We have some very winnable games and some games that may be a grind. But we are motivated to make that wildcard and hopefully Koz and Toe(who we play twice) are nice to us.
Budz : Looking forward to watching the race down the stretch, Who do you look for on your roster to carry the offence and get that big goal or play when you need it ? especially for this push ?
DTurp : Ya gonna be exciting. Got my boys SnipeTime09 and Mori. But also expect big things from my new boys. Chaos and Viibes. With Speljam hanging on in the pipes.
Budz : Awesome man sounds like a solid group to make a run with!
What type of hockey do you expect your team to play down the stretch to make that playoff push ?
DTurp : Cycling game using that spot behind the net. Getting our Dman into the game. And trap that blue line keeping shots to the outside. In a perfect world lol.
Budz : Perfect world for sure! Hopefully you can execute your game plan and pull out some big wins along the way! ... What team do you consider in your way and needing to beat to clinch that spot ? divisional games are important and where you gain the most ground.
DTurp : We have a double header against Laval which is a big point. Rochester twice as well. Those are huge games. Good thing we aren't the same team as the start of the season lol.
Budz : Those do sound like big games ahead of you. I wish you luck in the coming weeks!
Overall you have had fun and enjoyed your time in VGHL! Would you recommend the league to others?
DTurp : Thx Budz. If ya got time I recommend it for sure. As always a pleasure Budz. Gl rest of way.
Budz : Any other last words for the community if not thank you taking the time to sit and chat with me it was a pleasure.
DTurp : Love and respect to all.
Well VGHL there is another installment of Hanging with Budz after the long holiday break and holiday hangover. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years. We will see you all again next week as i make my way down to Rochester!!
