The Wilkes-Barre Penguins were in a very tough spot early this season. Going 0-12-0 with all 12 losses coming by way of forfeit, the Penguins found themselves in a deep hole before they even stepped foot on the ice as a team. However, it seems that now Wilkes-Barrie has almost everything they need to come back from this drought, and it’s certainly something to look out for.
On April 12th, both the Wilkes-Barrie Penguins and their now-current management both seemed to have been at rock bottom. After a rough start as owners of the Bakersfield Condors, Stick1155, and DaChicagoKid recieved a sudden release from management, which came as somewhat of a surprise to them, seeing as though they had just been coming off a win the previous night. They were then Free Agents, and had thoughts that, maybe their VG careers had already come to an end before they had even started.
However, just a day later, on April 13th, Stick and Chicago were given a second chance, when hired to take over a struggling Wilkes-Barrie Penguins team. At the time, they were the last place team in the league, and had not a single game actually played their whole season.
Last night, the Penguins gathered, and played together as a team for the first time. Heading into last night’s games 0-12, as the “worst team in the league,” no one expected anything out of Wilkes-Barrie. However, not only did they earn a win last night in their first ever game together, against the Marlies, but put on an even better performance in their second game against Syracuse. The Syracuse Crunch is the number 1 ranked team in the entire league, and, by the numbers, were expected to run through the Penguins. However, for 60 in-game minutes, the new Penguins went toe-to-toe with them, and even had them on their heels with a late scare that almost saw the Penguins tie the game and bring it to Overtime. Unfortunately, the Pens weren’t able to bring it to overtime, and fell short 3-2 in a back and forth game.
Based on last nights games alone, we can infer that the Wilkes-Barre Penguins are not the worst team in the league represented by a horrible record, but serious contenders to the AHL’s elite. Only really needing some defensive changes, Wilkes-Barre has everything it takes to make a resurgence this season. The Pens’ comeback story will definitely be something to look out for, as the season carries on.
