Player of the Week: Week 5
Welcome to the fourth edition of VGAHL’s Season 22 Players of the Week. The AHL’s top spot is up for grabs for quite a few teams this season, with 5 teams within 10 points of the league leading Syracuse Crunch. Players are stepping up big time this season, either making a name for themselves for a call up this season, or to be prime and ready for a breakout season next season in the NHL. Regardless of each players’ goals, the best teams have been able to play both outstanding offence and defense. With the Crunch leading the East, and the Silver Knights dominating the West, let’s see which players have stepped up for their teams past the midway point of the season.
Forwards:
bxrnyt1: 5 GP, 7 G, 24 A, 31 P, 6.20 PPG, +24, 5-0-0
Syracuse currently leads the entire AHL, and a big reason for that is due to Assistant bxrnyt. Just playing five games this past week, Bxrnyt certainly made the most of every game he played, going a perfect 5-0 and putting up incredible numbers. With 7 goals and 24 assists, good enough for over 6 points per game, he has been nothing but spectacular the entire season. Syracuse is in prime position to make a deep playoff run, and if no one can figure out how to stop Bxrnyt, then they will have no problem doing so.
Honorable Mentions
XPREDATORQC: 5 GP, 14 G, 13 A, 27 P, 5.40 PPG, +18, 4-1-0
Stutzle18: 6 GP, 14 G, 13 A, 27 P, 5.40 PPG, +18, 4-1-0
Butterov: 4 GP, 14 G, 8 A, 22 P, 5.50 PPG, +16, 4-0-0
Defense:
LUYEYEP123: 3 GP, 0 G, 11 A, 11 P, 3.67 PPG, +13, 3-0-0
Luyeyep may have only played 3 games this past week, but he had an outstanding 3 games, which is good enough to earn himself a defender of the week badge. Going a perfect 3-0 for the Western Conference leading Silver Knights, he was able to tally 11 assists and also 16 hits, doing it on both ends of the ice for the team. The Silver Knights will be a real threat to win the West and are currently dominating the conference. If Luyeye can get some more games in, Henderson may just even get a bigger lead on the rest in the West.

Goalie:
l-cujo31-l: 5 GP, 5-0-0, .878 SV%, 1.20 GAA, 1 SO
The Phantoms currently sit comfortably in a playoff position, 8 points ahead of the 3rd place team in their division, but they are quite behind the Devils for first in their division. Regardless, the ultimate goal is the Calder, and if you have a goaltender who puts up performances like these, you’ll always be a contender. Going a perfect 5-0 on the week, Cujo had a .878 save percentage, allowing 1.20 goals per game with a shutout to top it all off. Cujo has had an incredible season so far, and the only thing stopping him from being the best goaltender in the AHL, is the amount of games he has played so far.
